Projects like those by Interstellar Lab are designing biopods, modular habitats that recycle water, regulate air, and support plant growth. These units are being tested on Earth to simulate Mars-like conditions, helping prepare for long-term missions in space.
Energy solutions are also evolving. Solar panels optimized for lower light and extreme conditions are being tested for lunar and Martian applications. While no construction is yet happening on Mars, companies like Redwire are working on space-based manufacturing that could one day reduce our reliance on Earth-based supply chains.
NASA’s MOXIE experiment aboard the Perseverance rover has demonstrated a key step in sustainability. It successfully converted small amounts of Martian carbon dioxide into oxygen; a breakthrough in in-situ resource utilization, essential for future missions.
On the human side, smart suits are in development with built-in health monitoring and adaptive features to manage mobility, temperature, and pressure. Though still in the testing phase, these suits are tailored to cope with the challenges of low gravity and minimal atmosphere.
Though Mars is still far from being habitable, these technologies have real-world benefits.
